Case Study: Custom Packaging Engineering & Split Logistics

Showcasing Serum Vibrancy: Custom Window Box Engineering & Split Air/Sea Logistics for a Ginza Salon

This project: from specification to repeat orders

  1. Agree the specification

We proposed a clear bottle, transparent insert and window box. The client reviewed the sample before confirming the final specification.

  2. First production and split delivery

The first order was for 1,000 units. To fit the sales schedule, 20% went first by air and the remaining 80% by sea.

  3. Continuing with repeat orders

After the first delivery, the client continued to reorder, with quantities increasing.

A salon brand in Ginza, Tokyo approached GAMU to engineer packaging for a signature serum line featuring vibrant theme colors that convey its core product concept. Rather than concealing these tones inside an opaque box, GAMU engineered a custom die-cut window box that highlights the serum's natural appearance upon first glance.

The primary container selected was an ultra-clear glass bottle paired with a minimalist white dropper cap, subjected to 100% visual inspection. To securely hold the bottle while maximizing window exposure, we engineered a custom transparent thermoformed blister insert. This created a striking 'floating' visual effect while stabilizing the bottle against drop impacts during transit.

Because the client planned an omnichannel launch across both retail salons and e-commerce stores, our design team built high-resolution 3D models during the structural engineering phase. By simulating lighting and graphics around the die-cut aperture, we synchronized the physical packaging with digital marketing assets.

From artwork approval and structural blank mockup creation to press proofs, air express dispatch, and client sign-off in Tokyo, the prototyping cycle took just 7 days. The client approved the sample on the very first review, enabling an immediate transition to an initial production run of 1,000 units.

To meet the salon's launch timeline, we implemented a split-delivery logistics strategy: 20% of inventory was dispatched via priority air freight and delivered to Tokyo in 2 days for initial promotional campaigns; the remaining 80% travelled via fast ocean freight, arriving in approximately 10 days. The cartons were engineered to fold flat, substantially lowering freight and warehousing CBM costs.

Following the successful initial launch, the salon has placed recurring repeat orders with increasing batch sizes. What began as a question on 'how to showcase serum color' matured into an integrated supply chain partnership spanning bottle sourcing, bespoke box engineering, e-commerce graphics, and agile split logistics.
